Shop Local Sustainably Minded Newcastle Businesses That Deliver!

by Rachael Cullen

Do you want to shop local sustainably minded businesses that deliver? Me too! I don’t think anyone is quite ready for Christmas, but I am on a mission to make it easier for me and hopefully for you too.

Peak gift giving season is upon us as people prepare to give gifts for Christmas and end of year thank you’s, this week I’m about to put BB flower delivery service on pause as I focus on the impending birth of my first child. It’s a crazy and exciting time. Whilst flower delivery will be paused until 2nd February 2022, I wanted to share options to help customers, family and friends get through the gift giving season a little easier.

Botanica Bird Maternity Leave

Gift giving has always been a tricky time of year for me. I don’t like to give a gift for the sake of it, I want it to matter. I love knowing that whatever gift I’m giving that it’s going to be doing good. I love finding out the story behind what I’m giving. Knowing that it’s making a difference, literally means to me that I’m part of something bigger than myself, contributing to the greater good. The very thought of giving a meaningful gift can and does send me into a tailspin of overwhelm. It is seriously that important to me to give a good gift. It’s funny then that I’m in the business of creating gifts. How I feel about giving gifts has motivated me to make it easier for everyone, especially Newcastle locals to find and give unique gifts easily.

Whilst flower delivery is on hold until end of January 2022( the team and I will be back for February 2022!), I have some great options available now so you can still give flowers, yes, you read that correctly. You can give BB Flowers this Christmas! Plus if you’re looking for shop local initiatives, I’m excited to share some Newcastle small businesses doing great things that are quirky, different and sustainably minded. These are not just any gift giving suggestions either. I’ve curated my favourite local Newcastle Businesses that deliver. Giving you the opportunity to shop local, support local Newcastle businesses and give gifts that matter. And I’ve also included a way you can (if you can) give back to locals doing it tough.

Doughheads

Donuts Delivered Locally

Looking for some tasty treats. These are a bit different from the traditional box of chocolates or mince pies. Doughheads are donuts made from all fresh ingredients, made fresh daily and delivered locally in Newcastle.

Anna Farthing, Doughheads’ Founder and Creative Director, first started in a room in her house and build a semi-commercial kitchen.

I love how she accidentally created Doughheads. She shares on her About Us page:

“At the time, I was working on a separate business idea, but thought that doughnuts might make a fun side project, so much for that idea!”

Doughheads flagship store is at The Junction, Newcastle.

Supporting Others Doing It Tough

Every Christmas I like to think of others doing it tough. The unfortunate reality is that Christmas is not easy for everyone. If you’re looking for an opportunity to give someone an easier Christmas. Soul Cafe Level 2 Cnr Hunter & Watt Streets, Newcastle NSW. It is a great service that serves hot meals free of charge to the highly disadvantaged of the Newcastle region. They provide hundreds of free sit down and take away meals each week.

Many of Soul Cafe’s guests are dealing with issues of homelessness, drug or alcohol addiction, crime or violence, poverty, separation, mental health or illness concerns and accommodation needs.

Soul Cafe’s desire is to do more than just serve a meal. The ultimate mission of Soul Cafe is to see vulnerable cafe guests placed on a path towards increased safety, health and purpose.

This Christmas they have an appeal where you can help one of two ways:

  1. Donate items
  2. Donate financially

Have an amazing Christmas and New Year! We’ll see you all in 2022!
